Witches and wizards
When little Rosemary Whyte goes into the local wood with her friends to play she does not expect a Tree Witch to put a spell on her. But that’s exactly what happens – the witch shrinks her down to mouse size and when she wakes up, a mouse called Raymond is tugging on her sleeve and a huge crow is swooping down to catch her. They run off into a briar patch and escape. Luckily she is wearing a grey fur coat which her gran had given her for her birthday and because of this, Raymond mistakes her for a mouse – a town mouse – and he invites her to stay with his family inside a signal box by the railway line.

She has lots of adventures before being put on trial in the council glade at the centre of the wood for doing ‘Grievous Bodily Harm’ to the Sheriff – a horrible magpie called Hitler. She butted him in the eye when he tried to eat one of her friends. Raymond tells her that the jury will be packed with drunken stoats and weasels and the judge will be the Big Bad Badger.
So they have to find the Wise Old Owl for help. The only problem is: his nest is in a hollow tree in the Farside, where all the nasty dangerous animals like Mr Fox live . . .
